What's Happening
We've been busy throughout the summer improving and expanding our farm. It's now 3X bigger than when we started getting serious 2 yrs. ago. So many of you love our "hyper-fresh" local produce that we had to "grow" (pun intended). Throughout the hot, wet summer, we've hauled counless pick-up loads of organic matter (compost, muck, manure) to build up and improve our soil. Soil quality is the lifeblood of any farm and we want to have the best around. We're super proud of our soil...it is nothing like the plain sand that was there originally. It has a rich fragrance and dark color that farmers dream about...although perhaps the fragrance is an aquired love.
Finally, after rain delays (thanks to Faye and her fellow storms), our farm is tilled, our growing beds are shaped and our first transplants and seeds have been planted. BTW, we have a real tractor now, and it sure helps!
Our famous snap beans (green, yellow, purple) and summer squashed are on the early list, with broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers and a long list of others coming on behind.
The chicks we added in the Spring are now young layers and egg production from our cage-free chicken is up. Also, at the opening of this Fall's Abacoa Green Market, 10/18/08, we plan to feature something special: herb and specialty seedlings you can plant in your own garden.
